Empowering Women in Higher Education through Growth and Leadership Coaching

In the dynamic world of higher education, women leaders are making remarkable strides, breaking through barriers and reshaping the landscape of academia. However, our journeys to success are not without challenges. Recent American Council on Education data reveals a stark gender contrast across higher education institutions. While women are prominent at the staff and faculty levels, less than a third ever ascend to the role of administration. For those who do venture forward, the journey is fraught with challenges.

The roles that we occupy in the higher education environment are highly gratifying. Yet, the complexities that come with those seats are compounded by the current climate that exists both internally and externally in our organizations. As I network with women across the country, I continue to hear about the increasing threats of violence, board hostility, community hostility, and inhumane interactions that they are having to endure at the same time as they are leading their institutions through rapid cycles of continuous change, budget fluctuations, enrollment declines, and the inability to attract top talent to their organizations. I am struck by the fact that these strong women are feeling incredibly isolated. They internalize their trauma as an alternative to speaking out because they do not wish to seem incapable of leading through tough times. They do not want to seem outwardly as vulnerable as they often feel and certainly don’t want to risk losing the toehold that they have worked their entire career to achieve. While not insurmountable, these challenges demand a dedicated and specialized approach to help women thrive in leadership roles within higher education.

As women, our voices are vital in shaping the future of higher education, yet fewer women are electing to lead. Why is that the case? Unfortunately, they have witnessed firsthand the incredible toll that being a leader can take on not just the leader but also her family.  Yet, it doesn’t have to be that way if, as a leader, you can tap into support. The underrepresentation of women in leadership positions makes it challenging for aspiring women leaders to find role models and mentors who can guide them in their careers, and that is why I have chosen to dedicate my skills and expertise to working with and coaching other women. 

While I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Professional Life Coach, much of my expertise has its basis in the “school of hard knocks!” I am a current practitioner, have over 35 years of experience in higher education, and have served as a community college president at two organizations where I made history as the first woman to lead at both institutions. I truly understand the intricacies and hurdles women leaders face because I have and continue to live them daily. 

Women leaders need tailored support personalized for their individualized journey. Too many leadership initiatives are generalized to play to a broad audience. My coaching practice, Origins of Success, takes a boutique and comprehensive approach to empower you to overcome your current leadership challenges and hone a personalized set of dynamic leadership skills and strategies that will help you thrive. The Origins of Success logo depicts a nautilus. Nautiluses have been in existence for hundreds of millions of years.  They have survived five mass extinctions—all unfazed. While the nautilus cephalopod and humans are vastly different organisms, I selected the nautilus shell as a logo because I believe that there are comparisons between the nautilus’s remarkable ability to thrive by continuing its growth and how we, as humans, also thrive through continual growth, adaptability, learning from our past, self-development, and balance. 

Continual Growth

   – Nautilus: Nautiluses are known for their unique method of growth. They have a spiral shell with internal chambers. As the nautilus grows, it creates new, larger chambers, leaving the smaller, older ones behind. This adaptation allows them to maintain buoyancy at different stages of their life.

   – Humans: Like the nautilus, humans also have the capacity for continual growth throughout their lives. Whether it’s acquiring new skills, gaining knowledge, or developing emotionally, humans can adapt and expand their capabilities over time.

 Adaptability

   – Nautilus: The nautilus adjusts to its changing needs by creating new chambers in its shell. This adaptability is crucial for its survival, allowing it to navigate different depths in the ocean.

   – Humans: Personal growth often involves adapting to changing circumstances. Humans who seek improvement must be adaptable, open to learning new things, and adjusting their perspectives to overcome challenges.

Learning from the Past

   – Nautilus: The abandoned chambers in the nautilus shell serve as a record of its past growth. Each chamber represents a stage in its life, and the nautilus can learn from its history.

   – Humans: Reflecting on past experiences is integral to personal growth. Learning from successes and failures helps humans make informed decisions and improve their future outcomes.

Self-Development

   – Nautilus: The nautilus doesn’t stop growing until the end of its life. It actively engages in self-development by creating new chambers, allowing it to remain buoyant and survive in different environments.

   – Humans: Similarly, individuals who seek personal growth are on a continuous journey of self-development. Whether through education, skill-building, or personal experiences, humans strive to become better versions of themselves throughout their lives.

Balance

   – Nautilus: The nautilus maintains buoyancy and balance by adjusting its shell’s structure. This equilibrium is crucial for its survival.

   – Humans: Achieving balance in various aspects of life, such as work and personal life, is a common goal for those seeking personal growth. Balancing different facets contributes to overall well-being and success.

Like the nautilus, you, too, can change, evolve, and thrive.  Your origin of success already lies within you.  Like the nautilus, you can take charge of your destiny today and move from the old to the new!
